Mitochondria are an essential source of energy in mammalian cells. Still, we only begin to understand how mitochondria communicate with their hosting cell. In cardiac myocytes, Ca2+ is the main mediator of contraction and also controls other intracellular signaling processes.
In this mini-symposium, the current evidence and perspectives on mitochondrial signaling and subcellular Ca2+ trafficking in the heart are discussed.
